An image processing apparatus, which improves the qualitative effect or 3-dimensional effect on feeling of a subject picture, first analyzes the feature of the input picture thereby to evaluate feature values such as the mean value, histogram center value, variance, etc. pertaining to the lightness, saturation, and edge value. It discriminates the picture to be a texture stuff, colored stuff, etc. based on these feature values, and determines an image process operator and an image process parameter suitable for the purpose of process. It implements the image process that best matches with the picture based on the determined process operator and process parameter.
