A motor for rotating a pair of capstan journals for feeding a tape in a tape recording apparatus is operable both in forward and reverse directions, so that the direction of feed of the tape is determined by the direction of operation of the motor. When the motor operates in the reverse direction, the head base first moves away from the tape and then approaches the tape again.
